I have hundreds of reference books for fish anatomy, color. Etc., but more importantly, I have binders full of underwater photos and slides I have taken on dives trips throughout the world.
Correct reference is vital for painting nature.
Although I no longer collect any specimens from the sea, it`s important to have accurate reference for your paintings. I have corals and shells from all over the world that I collected as a child. These specimens are valuable to use for reference, however, I strongly discourage the purchase and / or collection of shells and corals today.
Conservation is vital for the oceans survival.
